Artist Statement
Alexandra Constantinou’s work focuses on the human element of science: cultivating traditions and superstitions; how people influence and are influenced by research; and in what way discoveries impact humankind. Over time, she has experimented with different media, including artists’ books, embroidery and video.
Constantinou constantly gravitates towards the science of space and humans’ exploration of our Moon, solar system and beyond. To the general public, science may seem clinical and detached from the wider world, but science is done by and for humans. People bring their backgrounds, interests and beliefs, which affect how science is done. Traditions build over time and can be acutely seen in the world of space exploration. Special meals and games before launches, personal items specially chosen for long-duration missions, messages traveling to interstellar space – these all happen because of the people who are involved in these scientific endeavors. Alexandra Constantinou seeks to discover and share these human elements through her artwork.
